Privacy Policy
Last updated: 24 May 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Fan Platform Ltd (“we”, “us”, “our”) handles information in connection with the Glint mobile app and this website (together, the “Service”). Fan Platform Ltd is the data controller. If you have any questions, contact us at david@fanplatform.co.uk.
Our approach in short
Glint is designed to be local-first. There is no account to create, and we do not ask for your name, email address, or a password to use the app. The collection you build, the photos you capture, and your spotting history are stored on your device, not on our servers.
Information the app uses on your device
- Location. With your permission, the app uses your device's location to centre the map on you, show aircraft near you, and calculate the bearing and distance to a plane you're pointing at. Your precise location is used on the device and is not stored on our servers against your identity.
- Camera. With your permission, the app uses the camera so you can photograph aircraft and use the point-to-spot view. Photos you take are stored on your device and, if you choose, saved to your photo library.
- Your collection & sightings. Logged flights, airports, streaks and notes are saved in the app's local storage on your device. Uninstalling the app removes this data.
Information our servers receive
To show live aircraft, the app asks our backend service for flights within the map area you are viewing. That request contains an approximate geographic bounding box (the part of the map on screen), but not your name, account, or a persistent identifier that we use to build a profile of you. Requests may be briefly cached to reduce load on upstream data providers, and standard, short-lived server logs may record technical details such as IP address and timestamps for security and reliability. We do not use these logs to track individuals or for advertising.
Third-party data sources
Glint brings together publicly available aviation data from third parties:
- Flight positions from community ADS-B networks (such as adsb.lol and airplanes.live), provided under the Open Database License.
- Aircraft and route details from public aviation databases.
- Aircraft photography from Planespotters.net, shown with their attribution.
- Map tiles from CARTO and OpenStreetMap contributors.
When the app requests data from these providers via our backend, the request is made by us on your behalf; your personal device identifiers are not shared with them.
Legal bases (UK GDPR)
Where data protection law applies, we rely on your consent for optional device permissions (location, camera, photo library), which you can grant or withdraw at any time in your device settings, and on our legitimate interestsin operating, securing and improving the Service for the limited technical processing described above.
Data retention
Data created in the app stays on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app. Server-side caches of flight data are transient and expire automatically. Technical logs are retained only as long as needed for security and reliability.
Your rights
Subject to applicable law, you have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office). Because most of your data lives only on your device, you can exercise deletion directly by clearing the app's data or uninstalling it. For anything else, contact us at david@fanplatform.co.uk.
Children
Glint is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date above.
